3 Tahitian recipes to cook in Cook’s Bay kitchenettes

Would you like to learn more about Polynesian cuisine? Would you like to take advantage of your kitchenette in your suite at Cook's Bay Hotel?

Here are 3 Tahitian recipes to prepare and enjoy in the comfort of your suite:

  • Tahitian ceviche with coconut milk

1/ Tahitian ceviche with coconut milk

This dish is a classic of traditional Tahitian cuisine.

Ingredients for 2 people:

  • Red or white tuna
  • One tomato
  • One small cucumber
  • One onion
  • 2 or 3 small green onions (to taste)
  • 2 or 3 limes (to taste)
  • 20 cl coconut milk
  • Salt and pepper

How to prepare raw fish in coconut milk

Cut the tuna into small pieces and soak in salted water for 5 minutes. Drain and place in a salad bowl.

  • Core the cucumber and tomato. Finely chop the tomato, cucumber, onion and scallions.
  • Pour the lemon juice over the tuna and mix well.
  • Add the vegetables, then the coconut milk.
  • Add salt and pepper to taste.

It's ready! And if you feel so, you can add grated carrot to the other vegetables.

2/ Tahitian coconut milk curry shrimp

In Moorea, you can buy shrimps directly from the producer. Visit the shrimp aquaculture farm at the entrance of Opunohu valley!

Ingredients for 2 people

  • 500 grams raw peeled shrimp
  • One onion
  • One small green onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • Grated fresh ginger
  • Curry powder
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

How to prepare the coconut curry shrimps

  • In a hot frying pan with a little olive oil, sauté the onion.
  • Add the garlic, ginger and curry powder.
  • Stir to blend the flavors.
  • Then add the shrimp and sauté until golden-brown.
  • Gently pour the coconut milk into the mixture and simmer for just a few minutes.
  • Remove from the heat, season with salt and pepper, and add the chopped green onions.

Serve with rice and enjoy!

3/ Tahiti's Chao Mein dish

Inspired by Chinese cuisine, chao mein is just one of the recipes offered by Tahitian cuisine.
Here is a vegetarian version.

Ingredients for 2 people

  • Chinese cabbage (or white cabbage)
  • One carrot
  • One onion
  • One small green onion
  • A clove of garlic
  • Chinese noodles
  • A few Chinese mushrooms
  • Olive oil
  • Oyster sauce
  • Soy sauce
  • Cornstarch
  • Salt and pepper

Preparing chao mein tahiti

  • Finely chop the cabbage, carrot, onion, green onion and garlic clove.
  • Drain (if necessary) and chop the Chinese mushrooms.
  • Mix a little cornflour, soy sauce and oyster sauce in a bowl.
  • Prepare the Chinese noodles as indicated on the packet, then set aside.
  • In a wok (or frying pan), pour a little olive oil and fry the vegetables over high heat for 5 to 7 minutes. The vegetables should remain crisp.
  • Add the sauce and stir until thickened.
  • Arrange the noodles on plates, then pour the sauce over them.

Bon appétit! Tama'a maita'i as we say in Tahitian!
