Directions from Tahiti.
It’s a 30- to 45-minute ferry ride from Papeete, with no layovers or domestic flights to worry about. If your international flight arrives late at Papeete Airport, you can catch the last ferry of the day and spend the night in Moorea. To get to Bora Bora, you’ll need an additional Air Tahiti flight and a well-timed connection.
A guest had planned to stay in Bora Bora for his entire trip. On our advice, he ultimately chose Moorea as his base, with a one-night, two-day stay in Bora Bora at the end of his trip. Upon his return: “If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing, because Moorea gave me so much more in a week than I expected, and I still got to see Bora Bora.”
Should we do both?
Yes, and many travelers visit Moorea and Bora Bora back-to-back. A two-week combined trip is doable, as long as you don’t overload the itinerary.
The classic mistake: three islands in 10 days. You’ll spend more time on domestic flights and in airports than enjoying the water. Travelers who return home with regrets are almost always those who tried to see too many destinations in too few days.
A realistic itinerary:
- Tahiti: 1 or 2 nights upon arrival, 1 night before the return flight
- Moorea: 4 to 5 nights (main base)
- Bora Bora: 2 to 3 nights
If your stay is longer than two weeks, you can add the Tuamotu Archipelago (Rangiroa or Fakarava for diving) to round out your Polynesia tour.
The catch that nobody tells you about: flights after 5 p.m.
That’s the most common mistake we see. And it costs you a night’s sleep.
Ferry service between Tahiti and Moorea is not permitted at night. The last ferry departs from Papeete in the late afternoon, around 5:00–5:30 p.m., depending on the day (check for seasonal variations).
The classic scenario: A guest books a stay in Moorea for a Tuesday. Their flight lands in Tahiti at 6 p.m. The last ferry has already left. The result: a night in a hotel in Papeete, a wasted night in Moorea, and a rough start to the trip.
A good tip: Check your flight’s arrival time at Tahiti-Faa’a before booking your first few nights on the island. If you land after 5 p.m., plan to spend the night in Papeete. You’ll take the boat the next morning, well-rested, as the sun rises over the lagoon.
A couple arrives in Tahiti at 6 p.m., proud of having “perfectly timed their arrival.” They head for the harbor, sprinting with their wheeled suitcases… only to watch the last boat glide leisurely toward Moorea—without them.
Verdict: a surprise overnight stay in Papeete, a consolatory mojito, and a lesson learned: in Moorea, the boat doesn’t wait for optimistic tourists! The next day, the first ferry, sunrise over the lagoon… and a story to tell for the rest of the trip!
How many days on each island?
Moorea: 4 nights minimum. With 4 nights, you’ll have time for a day at the lagoon, a hike (Belvédère or Mount Rotui), a boat tour, and a day with no set itinerary. If you stay fewer than 4 nights, you’ll leave feeling like you’ve only skimmed the surface of the island.

Bora Bora : 2 to 3 nights. The island is smaller. A complete boat tour takes one day. Add in some diving, overwater bungalows, and an evening on the white-sand beaches: 2 nights cover the essentials. 3 nights if you stay in an overwater bungalow and want to take your time enjoying it.
